  • The SENATE is part of "CORTES GENERALES" (PARLIAMENT)

    Composition:

    CONGRESS OF DEPUTIES:
    Between 300 and 400 members of parliament elected by citizens through universal suffrage.

    SENATE:
    Senators elected by citizens (208):
    4 Senators per province
    + 3 Senators per major island
    + 1 Senator per minor island or group thereof
    + 2 Senators for Ceuta and 2 Senators for Melilla

    Senators appointed by the Parliaments of the Self-governing Communities (58):
    1 Senator for each Self-governing Community
    + 1 additional Senator for every million inhabitants in their respective territory.

  • The most important functions of the Senate are:

    • Approve LAWS, together with the Congress of Deputies.

    • Approve General State Budgets.

    • CONTROL THE ACTIVITIES OF THE GOVERNMENT.

  • The Senate controls the actions of the GOVERNMENT through QUESTIONS and INTERPELLATIONS that the members of Parliament raise to the President and Ministers.

    In addition, through MOTIONS that urge the Government to guide its policy in a given line.

  • The Senate works with the CONGRESS OF DEPUTIES on the drafting and approval of laws that we must all fulfil.
